OpenAI API Credits Expire After 1 Year Without Proper Notification

I recently lost my prepaid OpenAI API credits and found it pretty frustrating. Since the expiration policy isn't clearly communicated, I wanted to offer a straightforward warning.

Prepaid API credits purchased from OpenAI (and similar providers) do expire after one year (or a limited time thereafter). If you’re experimenting and not using APIs heavily, purchase credits in the smallest amounts possible and keep an eye on the billing dashboard to refill.

Long Story

This is a gentle reminder to fellow developers who may occasionally forget about the poorly communicated expiration date on OpenAI API credits.

From a technical standpoint, it’s reasonable for digital products to have an expiration date. However, during my purchase of OpenAI API credits, it didn’t feel that way.

I believe this should have been communicated more clearly, especially when you’re not offering a pay-as-you-go model and require standard users to buy prepaid credits.

It’s crucial to acknowledge that expecting ethical considerations from AI companies—including the so-called ethical ones—is a naive expectation. To be transparent, I’ve only lost $9. There are certainly worse outcomes. Feeling for them. 😀 But this isn’t about the monetary value.

To avoid such issues, it’s advisable to purchase OpenAI (or any other) API credits in small quantities and top up when they’re nearing expiration. And never trust blindly.
